Looking for a job is very competitive in today's society and even people with extensive experience are struggling to get interviews and succeed in job interviews. Employers are expecting more and in some case wanting to pay less money. Here are some great tips that will hopefully help you land that new job or get your first job.
Review Your CV
If you have been working for many years sometimes your CV/Resume can become outdated without you even realizing it. You might have spelling or grammer mistakes that you don't even realize because they're in old job you have listed on your CV that you haven't looked at for years. Your CV may also be way way too long. Many recruiters have limited time to review your work history so if may be wise to summarize jobs older than 15 years.
Focus on Benefits
Whilst your skills are important and make you the person you are in terms of your career title, prospective employers are looking for benefits to your past employers. That is, how did the company benefit by you completing the projects or activities you have listed on your CV.
Customize Your CV
Whilst this takes a lot of time, if you've been working for a long time you may have high level skills which maybe put you at a disadvantage. It's difficult to accept however if you are in real need of a job and you have general manager competency and you're applying for project management roles, it will be very difficult for you to get an interview. You need to have a GM CV, a Project Management CV and a version for every type of role you want to apply for. Recruiters want a quick placement and if you are not the right fit on paper they will rarely give you the time of day.
Follow Up With a Call
Your success rate trying to get through on the telephone with a recruiter may be really low because many jobs have hundreds of applications however it is always worth trying. If you get through on the phone, be polite and try to summarize how your experience and skills suits the job you applied for.
Check For New Jobs
Check for
new jobs frequently. You can bookmark your job search so you can easily go to your favorite search. If you see a job that interests you apply soon so the recuiter see your application in the first batch of emails.
